- Barack Obama names Hillary Clinton as his secretary of state | The O team | The Economist: THE phrase ?team of rivals? has been on every pundit's lips since it became clear that Barack Obama would make Hillary Clinton his secretary of state. Coming from the title of a book about Abraham Lincoln?s cabinet, it seems to highlight that Mr Obama wants to hear dissenting opinions, including from his biggest personal rival, Mrs Clinton. But a look at his national-secur ity line-up, which was officially announced on Monday December 1st, suggests a team that will probably gel reasonably well. Mrs Clinton and Mr Obama sparred sharply during the primaries. Mrs Clinton voted for the Iraq war and touted her experience. Mr Obama called his stance against the war a virtue, along with his newness in Washington, DC, and his willingness to talk to America?s enemies such as Iran. Mrs Clinton responded that he was naive. But the two were posturing for the Democratic primary voters. In truth, their positions are not so far apart, even on the Iraq war, where both want withdrawal relatively soon.

- NY Times - One Man's Military-Indus trial-Media Complex: " General McCaffrey, 66, has long been a force in Washington?s power elite. A consummate networker, he cultivated politicians and journalists of all stripes as drug czar in the Clinton cabinet, and his ties run deep to a new generation of generals, some of whom he taught at West Point or commanded in the Persian Gulf war, when he rose to fame leading the ?left hook? assault on Iraqi forces. But it was 9/11 that thrust General McCaffrey to the forefront of the national security debate. In the years since he has made nearly 1,000 appearances on NBC and its cable sisters, delivering crisp sound bites in a blunt, hyperbolic style. He commands up to $25,000 for speeches, his commentary regularly turns up in The Wall Street Journal, and he has been quoted or cited in thousands of newsarticles, including dozens in The New York Times.
